FeNO Test for Asthma in Guwahati

What is a FeNO test, and how is it different from spirometry?

A FeNO test measures the amount of nitric oxide in your breath, which rises when there is a specific type of inflammation in your airways — the kind most common in asthma. While spirometry tells us how well your lungs move air, FeNO tells us whether your airways are inflamed and how likely you are to respond to inhaled steroids. Together they give a far clearer picture than either alone. At Breathe Clinic we use FeNO to diagnose asthma more accurately and to check whether your current inhaler dose is actually controlling the inflammation.

Reviewed by Dr. Smitakshi Medhi, MD, Consultant Pulmonologist.

When FeNO helps: suspected asthma with a normal spirometry, deciding whether you need inhaled steroids, or fine-tuning treatment when symptoms keep returning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the FeNO test the same as a normal breathing test?
No. Spirometry measures airflow; FeNO measures airway inflammation. They answer different questions and are often done together.

Does FeNO replace spirometry?
No — it complements it. Our pulmonologist decides which tests you need.

Is it painful or invasive?
No. You simply breathe out steadily into the device for about 10 seconds.
